DIY - Decorative Henna Inspired Candles

henna candles

For my first tutorial I wanted to do something that’s sort of my signature. I’ve been making these cute henna inspired candles for over a decade. They can be used for multiple occasions anything from the perfect gift for a housewarming to adding a special touch to a mehndi/henna event. It’s also a really great gift idea for Diwali although I wouldn’t recommend lighting them.  I’ve even made them as gifts for Mother’s Day (or any holiday really) and you can write a special message on them for your loved ones.

So how do you use henna on candles?

The process to make them is simple and doesn’t require any henna at all (unless of course you really wanted to use henna than you can substitute the paint for henna)

Heres what you’ll need

  • Candle

  • Mod Podge

  • Paint

  • Acrylic medium (optional)

  • Sponge or brush

  • Zip lock bag

  • Gems or glitter (optional)

  • Rubbing alcohol

Step 1 Prep the candle

Prep your candles by wiping it down with rubbing alcohol. Be sure to remove any lint that has attached itself to the wax.

Step 2 Seal the candle

Paint a layer of Mod Podge on your candle - I find this helps the paint to stick better BUT if you don’t want to do this you can also add some acrylic medium to your paint instead.

Step 3 Fill up your paint bags

Fill your zip lock bags with paint and tie it at the top. Once you’ve tied it and the paint is securely in there you can then cut a small hole at the tip to create a hole for the paint to flow out of. For a more refined look to your candle I recommend rolling actual henna cones to control the flow of the paint.

Step 4 Design your candle

Heres the fun part! Add your design to the candle. Once your design is complete I recommend putting the candle to the side to dry overnight.

Step 5 (optional)

If you would like to add gems nows the time to do it. Some people like to add it while the paint is still wet but prefer to wait until the paint is completely dry and then I stick them on individually with Mod Podge.

Step 6 How do you seal a henna candle?

Once the paint is completely dry seal - dab some Mod Podge on to your sponge or brush and paint over the design (note: if you seal it with Mod Podge it’s no longer safe to burn the candle and it should only be used for decorative purposes)

That’s it your done!

Here’s how I like to box my candles up :)
